The main difference is that invoices are issued before a business has received payment from a customer, and a receipt is issued after payment has been collected. An invoice is used when a business has completed a customer's order and needs to collect payment for the goods or services provided.

You cannot change the invoice number on any invoice, regardless of status. If you use inter-company accounting and retrieve bank account per distribution, you must void the payment before making invoice changes.

You can now return to the top of the invoice, click '... More' and choose 'Edit'. You'll be able to edit the invoice as needed. To match a payment to the invoice again after editing, click 'Enter Payment' and continue as usual.

In cases where you want to delete or amend an invoice, a credit note will usually suffice as the solution. A credit note allows you to effectively - and legally - cancel an invoice. It's required by law that you always keep a copy of all invoices you issue for control purposes.

If an incorrect invoice has been sent, the business must issue a cancellation invoice with its own, new invoice number. This will include a negative invoice amount, as well as the original invoice number and the date it was issued. Then, a correct invoice can be raised with a different invoice number.
