Alter Table Of Contents Deed For Free

By default, Word inserts a Table of Contents (TOC) with three levels of headings. For most people, that's usually more than enough. However, for very long complex reports, sometimes you need to report more levels in the case of my client, the regulatory body they were reporting to needed to see five TOC levels.

If you want the TOC to include just Heading 1 paragraphs but to otherwise look exactly like one of Word's default TOC styles, you can insert a TOC in that default style, select the TOC, right-click, click Toggle Field Codes, and then edit the field code directly so that it specifies that the TOC should include just 1

To do this, select the table and click the Table of Contents button at the top. Alternatively, you can go to the References tab and click the drop-down arrow for Table of Contents. Choose Remove Table of Contents at the bottom of the menu. You will not be asked to confirm the removal.

A TC field or table entry is a special code designated by the letters TC within curley brackets like {TC} This tells Word to insert this text within the code into a table of contents. To include text that occurs in the middle of a paragraph you can insert a TC field that contains the text you want.

(3) To add a Heading to the Table of Contents, highlight the added heading on the document, and click on the correct Heading button ( e.i. Heading 1, or Heading 2, etc.) at the Styles Section from the Home Tab.
