Format or customize a table of contentsGo to References > Table of Contents.Select Custom table of contents.Use the settings to show, hide, and align page numbers, add or change the tab leader, set formats, and specify how many levels of headings to show. Go to References > Table of Contents > Insert Table of Contents. Select Modify. If Modify is grayed out, change Formats to From template. In the Styles list, click the level that you want to change and then click Modify.

Update a table of contentsGo to References > Update Table.Select one of the following: Update page numbers only This only updates the pages that the headings are on, and ignores any changes to the heading text.Select OK.

Insert a table of contentsPut your cursor where you want to add the table of contents.Go to References > Table of Contents.If you make changes to your document that affect the table of contents, update the table of contents by right-clicking the table of contents and choosing Update Field.

Use the built-in keyboard shortcuts for the first three levels of headings: Alt-Ctrl-1, Alt-Ctrl-2, Alt-Ctrl-3. Use the Increase Indent button. It's on the Home tab, in the Paragraph group (Figure 6). And, to promote a paragraph (ie move it to the left), use the Decrease Indent button.

Click the line below the first section heading, then go to the REFERENCES tab, click Table of Contents, and Custom Table of Contents. Click Options. Then, uncheck Styles and Outline levels, and check Table entry fields. Now, Word will include only text that is marked with TC field codes.

To change the number of levels displayed in your Table of Contents, click Show levels, and then click the number of levels you want.
