1. Footnotes are numbered consecutively throughout a research paper, except for those notes accompanying special material (e.g., figures, tables, charts, etc.). Numbering of footnotes are "superscript"--Arabic numbers typed slightly above the line of text. Do not include periods, parentheses, or slashes.

When you write footnotes, you can choose to format them at the bottom of the page (footnotes) or on a separate page at the end of the paper (endnotes). Place your endnotes after the reference list on a separate page with its own title: Endnotes. This is where you can list all your notes.

Footnotes appear on the bottom of the page that contains the sentence to which it refers. Endnotes are listed at the end of the paper on separate pages. On the top of the first page, the title Notes is centered one inch from the top of the page.

Changing the formatting and layout of your footnoteSelect the footnote. After typing out the footnote, select it.Go to the top of your screen and click on references. At the bottom of the references column, click on the downward-facing arrow in a box.Make your changes. You can make several changes under this box.

Move a footnote or an endnoteTo move or copy a note, you work with the note reference mark in the document window, not with the text of the note. Select the note reference mark. Drag the mark to the new location.
