A status (Full Attestation) ? The service provider has authorized the call as coming from the correct origin, so consumers should feel confident answering their phones. B status (Partial Attestation) ? The service provider can verify where the call comes from but cannot verify that the caller owns the number.

Gateway Attestation (C) - The identity of the caller is not known, as the call originated outside of the network, or internationally. C level is applied when A or B cannot be.

Many would call it the most important part of STIR/SHAKEN. In the STIR/SHAKEN process, attestation occurs when the originating telephone service provider verifies the call's source and call number to attest the incoming number's authenticity.

Essentially, the attestation levels are designed to protect the integrity of the telecom networks and provide a way to signal confidence levels to other carriers that the calls can be trusted, and at what level.

Partial Attestation (B) - The originator knows the identity of the caller, but cannot confirm their right to use the Caller ID. Gateway Attestation (C) - The identity of the caller is not known, as the call originated outside of the network, or internationally. C level is applied when A or B cannot be.

Lastly, ?C? or ?gateway? attestations mean the provider has originated the call on the network, but cannot authenticate the call source.

STIR/SHAKEN digitally validates the handoff of phone calls passing through the complex web of networks, allowing the phone company of the consumer receiving the call to verify that a call is in fact from the number displayed on Caller ID.
