Invoice numbers are unique identification numbers assigned to invoices. In the UK, there is no legal requirement for how you should format your invoice numbers. However, it is required that your invoice numbers follow a sequence and do not include any repeats or gaps.

Invoice numbers are a mandatory invoice field. They should be assigned sequentially, meaning that the number of each new invoice increases. Legally, an invoice number sequence should never contain repeats or gaps. It's not recommended to simply number invoices '1', '2', '3', etc.

Since they are not legally binding documents, an invoice number should not be included. It is, however, important to distinguish between invoices and proforma invoices by including a Proforma or Invoice title.

Chronological Invoice Numbering The first series of numbers is the date, the second series of numbers is the customer number and the third series of numbers is the sequential unique identifier for the invoice. If you generate a second invoice on that date for that customer, the invoice number will be 20170630-4072-01.

Sequential Invoice Numbering You could start with 1, 2, 3, or even 00001, 00002, 00003. The most common sequential invoice numbering approach is to start with 0000000001 (9 zeros, followed by a 1). When doing this numbering manually, always write down the customers' name and amount owed in a separate sheet.
