Sort the contents of a tableSelect the table.Next to Table Design, go to Layout > Sort.In the dialog box, choose how you'd like to sort the table.Repeat for up to three levels.Select Options for additional settings, such as case sensitive, sort language, and if you have delimited information.Select OK.

To insert a Manual Table for your TOC in Word, simply:Click into your document where you want your TOC.Navigate to the References tab.Open the Table of Contents dropdown menu.Select Manual Table.

To create a manual table, go to References > Table of Contents > Click the dropdown to reveal the option for Manual Table. Microsoft Word inserts a TOC with placeholders which you can now edit. You can modify this with your own fonts and colors. Do remember that you also have to insert the page numbers manually too.

Click References > Table of Contents and then choose an Automatic Table of Contents style from the list. Note: If you use a Manual Table of Contents style, Word won't use your headings to create a table of contents and won't be able to update it automatically.

Go to References > Table of Contents > Custom Table of Contents. Select Modify. If Modify is grayed out, change Formats to From template. In the Styles list, click the level that you want to change and then click Modify.

In the table of contents, you should include all level 1 and 2 headings, left-aligned and formatted as plain text. Level 2 headings are indented. Including lower-level headings in the table of contents is optional. Add an additional indent for each level.

To change text direction in a table:Select the cell containing the text you want to change direction.To change the text direction, select Table Tools Layout > Text Direction.
