To create a manual table, go to References > Table of Contents > Click the dropdown to reveal the option for Manual Table. Microsoft Word inserts a TOC with placeholders which you can now edit. You can modify this with your own fonts and colors. Do remember that you also have to insert the page numbers manually too.

To write a table of contents, open a new document and list the major headings, titles, or chapters of the project in chronological order. Next, insert subheadings or subtopics if your project has those. Fill in the page number where each heading starts, then format the content in a table with 2 columns.

Click the heading of the section you want to move and drag it to a new location in the pane. A black line appears as you are moving through the headings in your document. When you release your mouse, the heading and the information in it drops below the black line to reorder your pages.

Format or customize a table of contentsGo to References > Table of Contents.Select Custom table of contents.Use the settings to show, hide, and align page numbers, add or change the tab leader, set formats, and specify how many levels of headings to show. Sort the contents of a tableSelect the table.Next to Table Design, go to Layout > Sort.In the dialog box, choose how you'd like to sort the table.Repeat for up to three levels.Select Options for additional settings, such as case sensitive, sort language, and if you have delimited information.Select OK.

Click ahead of the Table of Contents. Then, open the Table of Contents gallery, and click Custom Table of Contents > Options. The first three Heading Styles are mapped to the first three TOC levels. Scroll down to the new style, and map it to level 4, and click OK.
