Under a recently approved "common experience" settlement that's separate from the compensation for sexual and physical abuse, Ottawa is to pay about $2 billion toabout 78,000 people who attended the schools.

Day schools were institutions where thousands of Indigenous students were forced to go to but could leave at the end of the day. They can receive a range of compensation between $10,000 and $200,000, based on abuse suffered.

Canadian government commits $321 million to support survivors of residential schools. Canada's federal government announced Tuesday that it will commit over $321 million to the nation's Indigenous community in the wake of the discovery of several unmarked graves on the former sites of residential schools.

There are 139 Indian residential schools identified within the Indian Residential School (IRS) Settlement Agreement. This figure represents the residential schools that were funded and operated in whole by the federal government or in part by the federal government and a religious order.

The IRSSA recognized the damage inflicted by the residential schools and established a C$1.9-billion compensation package called CEP (Common Experience Payment) for all former IRS students. The agreement, announced in 2006, was the largest class action settlement in Canadian history.

The United Church paid $6.45 million under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, which helped fund healing supports for survivors. It has since donated millions to various Indigenous ministries, communities, and organizations.
