SPMCIL consists of two currency printing presses: the Currency Note Press (CNP) in Nashik and the Bank Note Press (BNP) in Dewas. New production lines are also set up in Mysore and Salboni.

The 5 Rupee note was the first paper currency issued by RBI in January 1938. The Rs 5 note had the portrait of George VI. Then within the same year, currency notes of Rs 10, Rs 100, Rs 1,000 and Rs 10,000 were issued.

Many European trading companies came to India's during the 18th century. These trading companies set up private banks which issued paper currencies in Indian subcontinent first. But these notes were text-based. Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning first introduced paper currency in Indian subcontinent in 1861 officially.

The currency presses of SPMCIL are at Nasik (Western India) and Dewas (Central India). The two presses of BRBNMPL are at Mysuru (Southern India) and Salboni (Eastern India). Coins are minted in four mints owned by SPMCIL. The mints are located at Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and NOIDA.

The first use of paper currency can be traced back to the year 806 AD in China. The paper currency was known as flying money.

However, ing to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), not paper but 100% cotton is used to print Indian bank notes. Cotton makes the notes more durable and less prone to damage from daily use as compared to those made using paper.

Currencyurrency notes are made up of pulp containing cotton, balsam with special dyes and blended with the textile fibers to make the currency notes that should be resilient, durable, with quality to resist from wear and tear and not to be d easily. Currency paper is composed of cotton and cotton rag.

Banknotes are generally made of cotton paper. Sometimes cotton is mixed with linen, abaca or other types of fibres to increase its life. The paper used is more durable than everyday paper which makes it resistant to wear and tear.

The ordinary paper that consumers use throughout their everyday life such as newspapers, books, cereal boxes, etc., is primarily made of wood pulp; however, United States currency paper is composed of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen.

Today, most national currencies have no backing in precious metals or commodities and have value only by fiat. With the exception of non-circulating high-value or precious metal issues, coins are used for lower valued monetary units, while banknotes are used for higher values.
