The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) does not disburse cash to individuals, and contrary to popular belief, the U.S. government does not mail out basic assistance checks to people simply because they are Native American.

Officials announced Saturday that the federal government and 325 First Nations have agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit, seeking reparations for the loss of language and culture brought on by Indian residential schools, for $2.8 billion.

The class action lawsuits were launched after the tribunal ruled Ottawa discriminated against First Nations children by underfunding on-reserve child welfare services, and ordered Ottawa to provide compensation to children and families affected by the system.

Indian schools formed and Native American children were taken from their homes and forced to abandon their cultural beliefs. After World War II, the Indian Claims Commission formed to compensate Amerindian tribes. It paid $1.3 billion dollars to 176 tribes, which only amounted to less than $1000 per individual.

The settlement agreement includes $10,000 in individual compensation for all persons who attended an Indian Residential School as a day scholar during the day, but did not sleep there overnight. A list of Indian Residential Schools included in this settlement is found in Schedule E of the agreement.
