Footnotes appear at the bottom or foot of the page. You can therefore put extra information in a footnote, such as source details for a citation, without interrupting the flow of the main text. Word doesn't renumber the footnotes because the footnote is still therealbeit marked for deletion. When the changes are accepted or rejected, then Word will renumber the footnotes accordingly.
