Assign Footnote Release For Free

A footnote is a reference placed at the bottom of a page or footer. They are referenced in the text in the same way as a citation i.e. the referenced text is followed by a superscript numeral (1), which corresponds to the numbered footnote at the bottom of the page.

Once the footnote text is selected, press F9. A dialogue box will open saying Word cannot undo this action. Do you want to continue? Select yes, and your cross-references will be updated! You can also update a single cross-reference by selecting it and pressing F9.

Tip: If you add, delete, or move a cross-referenced footnote or endnote, you must update the cross-reference number. Hold down CONTROL , click the cross-reference number, and then click Update Field on the shortcut menu. Word updates cross-references automatically when you print.

You have the option to restart footnote or endnote numbers so that numbering begins with 1 on each page or in each section.On the Insert menu, click Footnote.Under Format, in the Start at box, enter 1.On the Numbering pop-up menu, click the option that you want, and then click Apply.

Footnote numbers can't be copied/pasted. You can only copy/paste the text from a footnote, not the citation number. If you want to include the number somewhere else, you would need to add it manually.

To update all references in a document, select Edit Select All (or press Ctrl A), then press F9 or right-click and select Update Field. You can set Word to always update cross-references before printing your document.

Alternatively, you can view all the footnotes by switching to Draft view and, on the References tab, clicking Show Notes. With all the notes displayed in the Footnotes pane, you can Ctrl+click in the left margin to select them all, then press F9 to update.
