A blackout period prevents work from being performed in a defined area for a scheduled time period.

A blackout period in financial markets is when certain company employees are prohibited from buying or selling company shares. Most companies voluntarily impose a blackout period on employees who might have insider information ahead of earnings releases.

There are four basic cutover strategies: (a) pilot system, (b) immediate cutover, (c) phased cutover, and (d) phased cutover. Each of the three main strategies incurs different migration costs and a different degree of risk. Immediate cutover offers low cost yet high risk.

A project cutover entails the execution of a set of tasks required to successfully go live with a well-defined scope on a production environment. In the past, it was common to do a big bang go-live after a multi-year solution implementation period. Now, however, businesses frequently follow a more agile approach.

NOTE: At National Grid, "Cutover" refers to the technical steps that must be executed during a project's go-live, typically during a weekend. "Deployment" refers to the overall process of taking a project or program live.
