Although they have many different names, the two main approaches to a compare/contrast essay are block style and point-by-point style. The block approach explains about three aspects of one topic in a paragraph, then compares or contrasts the same three aspects about another item in the next paragraph.

An outline is a map of your essay. It shows what information each section or paragraph will contain, and in what order. Most outlines use numbers and/or bullet points to arrange information and convey points.

The Block Method presents all arguments related to A, and then compares and/or contrasts them to all arguments related to B. This style is a little bit more difficult to use because there is so much space between points about A and points about B; however, it can be useful for shorter assignments.

In the body of the essay (ignoring introduction and conclusion), Block Format presents its comparison and contrast in two or more paragraphs depending on how many items are being compared and contrasted to each other.

In block format, the entire text is left aligned and single spaced. The exception to the single spacing is a double space between paragraphs (instead of indents for paragraphs). An outline presents a picture of the main ideas and the subsidiary ideas of a subject. Some typical uses of outlining might be an essay, a term paper, a book review, or a speech.Some professors will have specific requirements, like requiring the outline to be in sentence form or have a "Discussion" section.

When using the block method, begin by discussing all the main points about the first topic you are discussing, then move on and make all the points you want to make about the second topic (and then the third topic, etc., if you are comparing and contrasting more than two things).
