Blueprint paper is a specially-coated paper that turns blue where it is exposed to light, while areas kept in the dark remain white. Blueprints were one of the first ways to make copies of plans or drawings.

When you bring your originals to the printer, your blueprints will be created using a machine that is commonly known as a blueline printer. Unlike a conventional printer, which scans and prints documents using ink, a blueline printer creates exact copies through the use of a diazo process.

Blueprints can be printed on Mylar paper (transparent or frosted) using a laser process. But they can only accommodate black and white prints. Vellum is a more traditional paper type on which you can print black and white architectural or engineering plans.

The blueprint process is based on a photosensitive ferric compound. The best known is a process using ammonium ferric citrate and potassium ferricyanide. The paper is impregnated with a solution of ammonium ferric citrate and dried.

The blueprinting paper, which is still white, is placed in an aqueous solution of potassium ferricyanide. This compound reacts with ammonium ferrous citrate and forms a compound called prussian blue. This compound, in it's hydrated form, is blue.

Vellum plotter paper is the preferred choice for printing a large volume of blueprints as it delivers crisp, clear blueprints. Because of the high quality printing capabilities, vellum plotter paper is used for printing final project design. Vellum plotter paper can only be used for inkjet printing.
