A laid paper is a type of paper which has fine ridges on its surface, historically produced during manufacture. Originally, laid paper was made by hand in large vats. Wove paper has a uniform surface and no texture or watermark.

Laid. Laid paper texture, which strives to emulate the look of fine handcrafted paper, features fine lines running across the page both horizontally and vertically. Paper made in the 18th century up to about 1800-1810 was ?laid? paper, and held up to the light will show parallel lines throughout, like ribbing, where it had been laid on a rack to dry.

The watermark is not the only distinctive feature of a sheet of handmade paper. Handmade paper retains an impression of the entire mould in which it was made, including its sieve-like wires. The impression of one set of wires, called chainlines, run parallel to the shorter edges of the sheet.

Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. In the pre-mechanical period of European papermaking (from the 12th century into the 19th century), laid paper was the predominant kind of paper produced.

Sometimes the pattern is more pronounced, but other times you need to know what to look for: a grid of strong vertical lines, called chain lines, divided by more delicate and plentiful horizontal lines, called laid lines. We call this kind of paper laid.
