In January 2007, the government published Early Learning for Every Child Today: A Framework for Ontario Early Childhood Settings. This document was developed by the Best Start Expert Panel on Early Learning to help to improve quality and consistency in early childhood settings across Ontario.

How Does Learning Happen? is organized around four foundational conditions that are important for children to grow and flourish: Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement, and Expression.

Objective, factual written observations include the following: Descriptions of actions. Descriptions of children's vocalizations. Direct quotes of children's language. Descriptions of facial expressions and gestures. Descriptions of creations (e.g., stacked blocks, scribble drawings, finger-painted pictures)

ELECT helps clarify these developmental markers for each age group and shows the approximate skills they should be learning at each age group. The domains are Social, Emotional, Communication, language, and literacy, Cognitive, and Physical.

Documenting student learning is something you can (and should) do every day and won't take more than three minutes (when done correctly). Write a reflection? snap a photo?record an audio response?or record a video. These simple reflections are tremendously useful for you and your students.

Documentation can be written as in taking observation notes on what you observe the child doing, or through dictation as you transcribe what the child explains about a picture, event or experience. Other forms of documentation can include photography, tape recording, and videoing.
