Typist initials are used to indicate the person who typed the letter. If you typed the letter yourself, omit the typist initials.

They include the initials of the letter's writer in all caps, followed by a slash mark or colon, and then the initials of the typist in lower case. For example, if William Shakespeare typed a letter for his manager Virginia Woolf, the typist's initials would be: VW/ws.

Typist initials go near the end of your business letter but before any enclosures, and they include initials for both the writer of the content and the typist. The initials of the business letter's writer go first, in capital letters, followed by a colon or slash mark, then the typist's initials in lowercase.

Click the ?Insert? tab if it is not already showing. Click the ?Text Box? button and choose ?Simple Text Box? from the fly-down menu. Word inserts a text box onto the page. Click inside the placeholder text and type your initials.

Some companies require them so that they know who actually typed the letter versus who composed it, in order to determine who is responsible for typos, misspellings and other mistakes that took place when the letter was produced.

If all the letters are the same size (also known as block), initials are ordered like your name: first, middle and last. If the monogram features a larger center initial, the ordering is always first name, last name, and middle name. So Elizabeth's monogram would be ESB and Charles's monogram would be CSW.

Placement. The very last section of a business letter is dedicated to reference initials. These initials are always placed at the bottom of a letter, two lines below the signature block and aligned with the left margin.
