Relative to the movement of materials within technical services, cataloging usually follows the receipt of ordered books in acquisitions. The process of cataloging involves three major activities, namely, Descriptive Cataloging, Subject Cataloging, and Authority Control.

Cataloging or Cataloguing or Library Cataloging is the process of creating and maintaining bibliographic and authority records in the library catalog, the database of books, serials, sound recordings, moving images, cartographic materials, computer files, e-resources etc.

Creating a catalog record for an item without the aid of another library's record (called copy cataloging). Original cataloging is most often needed for unique items, such as materials pertaining to local history, archival materials, rare books, manuscripts, maps, some sound recordings, etc.

Copy cataloging often involves matching an existing bibliographic record to an item. Determining whether or not a bibliographic record is a match can depend upon knowing what guidelines were used in the construction of the description.

Level 2 may include personal name and subject heading added entry headings. The selection of individuals for added entries and the number of name and subject added entries depends on the type of material being cataloged.

There are three types of inner forms of a catalogue, viz. alphabetical, classified and alphabetico-classed. Author, Name, Title, Subject and Dictionary catalogue fall in the category of an alphabetical catalogue. A Classified Catalogue is so named because it is arranged in a classified order.

Levels of cataloging. CONSER records may be created at three levels: full, core, or minimal. Most records are created at the full or core level; minimal level cataloging is generally used only for resources of little research value, backlogs, etc.
