The easiest way to create a type catalog is to use the Export Family Types tool on an existing family. Using this tool, you create the base type catalog and then modify the text file in a text editor.

The type catalog provides a dialog that lists the available family types that you can sort through and select before you load types into a project.

The Built-in parameters, or OOTB (Out of the box) parameters are those that already exist in a file for elements when you start modeling, both in a project file or in a family file. They are always available because they are the basic properties that objects have so that Revit can work with them.

However, you can make a custom parameter (Project or Family) available to tags and schedules by making them a Shared Parameter. Shared Parameters are defined in an external text file (a Shared Parameter file) and you can access them also on the Manage tab.
