Certify Table Of Contents Title For Free

If you've manually applied formatting to any of your titles, they might show up in the TOC. But a title in a document with a "Title" heading (or "Subtitle" heading) generally won't appear in the TOC (or outline). Instead, use only Headings 1-6 for your titles.

What not to include. You do not include the acknowledgements, abstract or table of contents itself on the contents page. The first two are located before the table of contents, so the reader has already seen these pages when they reach this section.

Once you've applied heading styles, you can insert your table of contents in just a few clicks. Navigate to the References tab on the Ribbon, then click the Table of Contents command. Select a built-in table from the menu that appears, and the table of contents will appear in your document.
