In the ribbon section, go to the references tab and click on the large 'Insert Footnote' icon....Changing the formatting and layout of your footnoteSelect the footnote. After typing out the footnote, select it.Go to the top of your screen and click on references.Make your changes.

Select all footnotes in a document with Ctrl + A You can use the hotkey Ctrl + A to select all footnotes at once in a Word document. Please do as follows. Click to put your cursor at any footnote of your document, press the Alt + A keys simultaneously, then all footnotes in current document are selected immediately.

To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).

Under Location in the Footnote and Endnote menu, find the Footnotes option (it should be selected by default when you first open the menu). Open the dropdown menu to the right of that option and you can change your footnote location to either the bottom of the page or below the text.

Give a full reference to the source in a footnote the first time it is mentioned (see 'Footnotes'). After that, it can be cited using the author's last name and the footnote number where a full reference to the source was last given (n). See 'How do repeated references work? ', above, for an example.
