As with a personal vehicle, the title of a leased vehicle is in the name of the owner of the vehicle. Since the leasing company holds the registration, their name will also appear on the title. As the legal owners of the vehicle, they take on the responsibilities of maintenance and repairs as part of their investment.

How Does a Lease Buyout Work? Like buying a car, leasing one typically involves making a large upfront payment and smaller monthly payments over the lease term (generally two or three years). The key difference is that a vehicle becomes yours when a loan is paid off, but you won't own a leased car when its lease is up.

If you opt for a lease buyout when your lease is up, the price will be based on the car's residual value the purchase amount set at lease signing, based on the predicted value of the vehicle at the end of the lease. This amount may also be called the buyout amount or purchase option price.

Once a lease has been signed, there's no way to change the monthly payments that are specified in the contract between you and the leasing company. You can't renegotiate your lease in the same way you can refinance a car loan.

Under most circumstances, when you first register and title a vehicle that you bought in New York State, you must provide DMV either a title or transferable registration signed over to you as proof of ownership.

Look for a buyout amount or payoff amount that will be listed on your monthly leasing statement. This buyout amount is calculated by adding up the residual value of your vehicle at the beginning of the lease, the total remaining payments, and possibly a car purchase fee (depending on the leasing company.)
