The straight-line concept is based on the idea that the usage of the rental arrangement is on a consistent basis over time; that is, the rented asset is used at about the same rate from month to month. To calculate straight-line rent, aggregate the total cost of all rent payments, and divide by the total contract term.

Calculating straight-line expense is incredibly straightforward! You just take the total amount of lease payments and divide it by the number of months of the lease term.

The journal entry for a capital lease is the fair value of all future lease payments, calculated as the present value of future lease payments in the lease contract. Journal entries include the initial recognition of the lease, along with finance lease interest, depreciation, and recording payments.

If you use what's called a capital or finance lease, you report the leased property on your balance sheet as if it were an asset you own. If you have an operating lease, you record it as a liability.

Initial recordation. Calculate the present value of all lease payments; this will be the recorded cost of the asset. Record the amount as a debit to the appropriate fixed asset account, and a credit to the capital lease liability account.

There are two categories of leases - operating leases and finance, which determine how a company accounts for leases based on the length of the lease in the financial statements.

A lease will be recorded on the balance sheet as a right-of-use (ROU) asset and lease liability. The lease liability is the payment obligation over the term of the lease contract, while the ROU asset represents the control of the asset under the lease contract.

Common types of non-current liabilities reported in a company's financial statements include long-term debt (e.g., bonds payable, long-term notes payable), leases, pension liabilities, and deferred tax liabilities.

Select Series Data: Right click the chart and choose Select Data from the pop-up menu, or click Select Data on the ribbon. As before, click Add, and the Edit Series dialog pops up. There are spaces for series name and Y values. Fill in entries for series name and Y values, and the chart shows two series.

To create a combo chart, select the data you want displayed, then click the dialog launcher in the corner of the Charts group on the Insert tab to open the Insert Chart dialog box. Select combo from the All Charts tab. Select the chart type you want for each data series from the dropdown options.
