If you later want to view the footnotes or endnotes window, you can display the References tab of the ribbon and click Show Notes in the Footnotes group. This displays the Footnotes or Endnotes window.

In Microsoft Word the number of words in your document is displayed on the status bar at the bottom left of the workspace. To include text in footnotes, endnotes and text boxes in the word count: From the Review tab, in the Proofing group, click Word Count.

To search for a footnote, follow these steps: Press Ctrl+F to display the Find tab of the Find and Replace dialog box. (See Figure 1.) In the Desktop application, if you switch to Draft View and then click on Show Notes in the Footnotes section of the References tab of the ribbon, you can then see all of the footnotes in the Footnote Pane.

Insert footnotes and endnotes Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.

The reason that footnotes are still popular in some fields is that most word processing programs now include a function that makes it very easy to include footnotes in any paper. In Microsoft Word, clicking Insert > Reference > Footnote allows you to insert footnotes automatically, and automatically numbers them.

On the Word menu, click Preferences, and then click View. Under Nonprinting characters, select the check boxes next to "Hidden Text".
