In Microsoft Word the number of words in your document is displayed on the status bar at the bottom left of the workspace. To include text in footnotes, endnotes and text boxes in the word count: From the Review tab, in the Proofing group, click Word Count.

Use footnotes and endnotes to explain, comment on, or provide references to something in a document. Usually, footnotes appear at the bottom of the page, while endnotes come at the end of the document or section.

Click the References tab. Click the Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote button. A reference number is placed in the text, and a new footnote or endnote is created. Your text cursor is moved to the footnote or endnote, so you can type out your reference.

If you later want to view the footnotes or endnotes window, you can display the References tab of the ribbon and click Show Notes in the Footnotes group. This displays the Footnotes or Endnotes window.

A footnote is a reference, explanation, or comment1 placed below the main text on a printed page. Footnotes are identified in the text by a numeral or a symbol. In research papers and reports, footnotes commonly acknowledge the sources of facts and quotations that appear in the text.

Insert footnotes and endnotes Click where you want to reference to the footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote. Return to your place in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the beginning of the note.

The footnote usually includes the author's name, publication title, publication information, date of publication, and page number(s) if it is the first time the source is being used. For any additional usage, simply use the author's last name, publication title, and date of publication.

Footnotes and different referencing styles Footnotes are not allowed. Citations within the text should include the name of the author, the date of the source, and, if necessary, the page numbers you used. The rest of the information, such as the title and publication details, should be included in the bibliography.

A footnote is a piece of text which, for some reason, cannot be accommodated within the main body of the document and which is therefore placed elsewhere.

In the Desktop application, if you switch to Draft View and then click on Show Notes in the Footnotes section of the References tab of the ribbon, you can then see all of the footnotes in the Footnote Pane.
