Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.

Footnotes should:Include the pages on which the cited information is found so that readers easily find the source.Match with a superscript number (example: 1) at the end of the sentence referencing the source.Begin with 1 and continue numerically throughout the paper. Do not start the order over on each page.

Footnotes appear on the bottom of the page that contains the sentence to which it refers. Endnotes are listed at the end of the paper on separate pages. On the top of the first page, the title Notes is centered one inch from the top of the page. Endnote pages are placed before the bibliography.

When a footnote must be placed at the end of a clause,1add the number after the comma. When a footnote must be placed at the end of a sentence, add the number after the period. Numbers denoting footnotes should always appear after punctuation, with the exception of one piece of punctuation3the dash.

In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and author's name along with other information related to the type of citation.

Finding a Footnote ReferenceClick the Home tab, and in the Editing group, choose Find 2192 Go To. Or, press Ctrl+G.In the Go To What list box, select Footnote or Endnote.In the Enter Footnote Number text box, type the number of the footnote you want to go to.Click Go To and then click Close.

How to insert footnotesPlace the cursor where you would like the superscript number to appear.Click on Insert Footnote in the References tab.The corresponding number will be automatically inserted in the footer ready for you to add the footnote citation.Type in your footnote citation.
