Sometimes a watermark in stamp paper can be seen just by looking at the unprinted back side of a stamp. More often, the collector must use a few basic items to get a good look at the watermark. For example, watermark fluid may be applied to the back of a stamp to temporarily reveal the watermark.

Modern U.S. stamps don't have watermarks, but many older ones do, in the shape of a single line or double line U, S, or P. See illustrations below. To see if your stamp has a watermark, place it face down in a watermark tray, and pour enough watermark fluid over it to cover completely.

On some stamps the watermark is particularly strong and can be seen simply by holding the stamp to a light and viewing the back, or by placing the stamp face down on a plain black surface, like the back of a black stock page. On other stamps, the watermark may be nearly impossible to detect, even using watermark fluid.

Many of the world's stamps are coated with a luminescent material that glows when exposed to ultraviolet light, but is invisible to the unaided eye. The coating is called taggant, and the application of taggant to a stamp is called tagging.

Look for an inscription. While some stamps don't display the country and currency, they have inscriptions, or letters, words, and numbers that are part of the stamp design. A simple internet search for the inscription on your stamp can help easily identify a stamp's country of origin.
