Choose Comment Resolution For Free

In Word, the default is to display comments and deletions in balloons in the document margins. But the display can be adjusted to view comments inline. You can easily view inline comments by resting your pointer on the comments indicator. Find the "Review" tab, select the "Tracking" group, and click on "Show Markup".

As you've found, Resolving a Comment does not remove it from the document... It merely dims the Comment as an indication that the Comment has been seen and/or dealt with.

Microsoft has introduced a temporary option in Word that lets you turn off Modern Comments and revert to Classic Comments. Unfortunately, we must expect that the option will disappear some day. To get the old comment features back: Select File > Options > General > turn OFF the Enable modern comments check box.

Click on the Review tab, and then the Tracking group. Then click on the Reviewing Pane button. You can choose either the vertical or horizontal display to open the Reviewing Pane and view comments in Word 2016.

To view all comments, including all resolved comments, open the Comments pane by clicking Comments in the ribbon. You can interact with comments in the Comments pane the same as you would in the contextual view. If you reopen a resolved comment, it will be visible again in the contextual view.

Click the Review tab, then click the Reviewing Pane button in the Tracking group. Note: By default, the Reviewing Pane will be displayed vertically and positioned to the left of the screen. From the Reviewing Pane button drop-down menu, choose either Reviewing Pane Vertical or Reviewing Pane Horizontal.

To mark a comment as resolved: Click in the comment text of the comment you are going to mark as resolved. Click the Resolve icon below the comment text (see Figure 5 above). Right-click in the comment and select Resolve Comment.
