Claims are pieces of information about a user that have been packaged, signed into security tokens and sent by an issuer or identity provider to relying party applications through a security token service (STS).

Claims-based authentication is a mechanism which defines how applications acquire identity information about users.This token carries information about the authenticated user (the user's identity), which is referred to as claims.
