One of the inherent risks of relying solely on the "Compare to Previous Period" option is the variability of data between periods. Data points can fluctuate significantly, leading to misleading comparisons.

Go to ?Data? pane, scroll down to ?Default date range? section and click on ?Comparison date range? drop-down menu? ?select the option for ?Previous period? and click ?Apply?.

The following examples use the same sample data used in the previous section: Use Period Over Period Comparison Percent, (( Period Over Period Comparison / Num of Prior Periods) *100) (In this example, it's prior 6 days)

To create a new comparison, go to any standard report in Google Analytics 4, for example, Reports > Reports snapshot. Then in the top-left corner of the report, click Add comparison. Another option is to click the icon Edit Comparisons. A new sidebar will slide in from the right side.

Period-over-period analysis is a pattern of analysis that measures something in the present and compares it to the same measurement in a comparable period of time in the past. The goal is to adjust the slice of the past you are looking at, so the same amount of time has passed in the two periods you are comparing.

To compare two different date ranges: Select the Compare to checkbox, then select Custom, Previous Period, or Previous Year. Use the controls to set the second date range. Click Apply.

Comparing Timeframe Data in Google Analytics In the Google Analytics dashboard notice a calendar in the top right hand corner. Select the first time period you'd like to compare. Check the "compare to" and "previous year" option. You can also compare to the previous quarter, or two custom timeframes.
