A population pyramid is a graph that shows the distribution of ages across a population divided down the center between male and female members of the population. The graphic starts from youngest at the bottom to oldest at the top.

They are: Finite Population. Infinite Population. Existent Population. Hypothetical Population.

There are generally three types of population pyramids created from age-sex distributions-- expansive, constrictive and stationary.

Common summary measures of age structure include the mean age of population, median age of population, proportion of population at young ages (e.g., under age 20), and proportion of population at old ages (e.g., age 65 and above).

Age structure data allow the rate of growth (or decline) to be associated with a population's level of economic development. For example, the population of a country with rapid growth has a triangle-shaped age structure with a greater proportion of younger individuals who are at or close to reproductive age.

One of the tools that demographers use to understand population is the age structure diagram (it is sometimes called a population pyramid, but it is not always pyramidal in shape). This diagram shows the distribution by ages of females and males within a certain population in graphic form.

It is common in demography to split the population into three broad age groups: children and young adolescents (under 15 years old) the working-age population (15-64 years) and. the elderly population (65 years and older)
