American usage calls for a month/day/year date format, the United Kingdom and much of Europe use a day/month/year format, and most countries in Asia use the year/month/day format.

Although the standard allows both the "YYYY-MM-DD" and YYYYMMDD formats for complete calendar date representations, if the day [DD] is omitted then only the YYYY-MM format is allowed. By disallowing dates of the form YYYYMM, the standard avoids confusion with the truncated representation YYMMDD (still often used).

A format specifier consists of a set of values, such as %m, and separators, such as the / character. For example, %d %B %Y represents dates that appear in the format of 21 February 2012. For example, you can specify %B for dates that contain strings like February, FEBRUARY, or FEBruary.

Without a date tag, it's impossible to tell if an article was written two days or two years ago and therefore whether it is at all useful to the reader.
