A normal version number MUST take the form X.Y.Z where X, Y, and Z are non-negative integers, and MUST NOT contain leading zeroes. X is the major version, Y is the minor version, and Z is the patch version. Each element MUST increase numerically. For instance: 1.9.0 -> 1.10.0 -> 1.11.0.

Release numbers are used to record the preauthorized order numbers for a product being delivered. Release numbers specify the order number, quantity, and status.

Under the semantic numbering convention (more on this below), the numbers work as follows: First Number: Tracks major changes. Second Number: Tracks minor changes. Third Number: Tracks patches or mere bug fixes. Fourth Number: Tracks changes less significant than a patch.

Generally speaking, a Version is whenever the makers feel like tagging it as some point they may want to refer to, while a Release is something that gets, well, released.

Each release of a specific software program, firmware, file, device driver or hardware is assigned a version number. Minor Version ? This indicates that new changes or features were added, but the software is still backwards compatible, and programming changes will not be needed, except to implement any new features. Going from version 1.1 to 1.2 will only add new features, not cause any compatibility issues.
