For printing ID cards, most image files are too small to see any better clarity in 600dpi over 300dpi. 600dpi printing also takes longer to print each card and reduces the lifetime of the print head due to the increased workload. In other words, 300dpi is your best bet.

In many cases, the best resolution for printing is 300 PPI. At 300 pixels per inch (which roughly translates to 300 DPI, or dots per inch, on a printing press), an image will appear sharp and crisp. These are considered to be high resolution, or high-res, images.

A high resolution image is one that's at least 300 DPI, or "dots per inch." As in the printer spits out 300 little dots of ink for every inch of your photograph.

Pixel density Now, the resolution is expressed in dpi (or ppi), which is the acronym for dots (or pixels) per inch. So, if you see 72 dpi it means that the image will have 72 pixels per inch; if you see 300 dpi means 300 pixels per inch, and so on.

The difference between 300dpi and 72dpi is found in the amount of pixel information (or dots) for every square inch of the image you are viewing. The more dots/pixels the image contains, the sharper the image will print. When designing graphics for commercial printing purposes, your images should be 300 dpi.

For most artwork, 300 dpi is preferred. Most printers produce excellent output from images set at 300 ppi. You can use 150 dpi for large prints because the difference in print quality is not very noticeable on large pieces when you look at the prints from a distance.

The standard resolution needed for printing is 300 DPI. A higher DPI means a higher quality print and is the standard quality for most professional printings (Side note: If you plan on submitting a piece for our Art in the Windows project, the image needs to be at least 150 DPI!).
