Cut Quantity Permit For Free

Timber operations is the cutting and/or removal of timber or other solid wood forest products, including Christmas trees, from timberlands for commercial purposes, including the conversion of timberland to other purposes such as residential uses. Timber operations require a permit.

Collecting dead or down wood for immediate campfire use is allowed except in posted areas. designated cutting areas. Small amounts of plants, plant parts, seeds, flowers and berries may be collected for personal use in most areas.

Self- serve permits can be obtained and completed at the entrance to the CSFS State Forest Office at 59228 Highway 14, Walden CO 80480. For additional information, contact CSFS at 970.723. 4505 or CSFS_stateforest@mail.colostate.edu. Purchase permit prior to cutting.

Free Use Permits may be issued in special circumstances for materials that are for personal use and may not be bartered or sold. Timber is not available via Free Use. Subsistence Use Permits may be issued to rural residents for fuelwood, and some other special forest products where limited barter or sale is permitted.

Most national forests allow users to harvest trees for personal use firewood and Christmas trees, but you must first have a Forest Service-issued permit and you must follow specific guidelines, which can vary from forest to forest.

Permits are for noncommercial, personal use only. Cost of firewood permits for 2023 are $20.00 for 10 cords. The fuelwood permits are only good for cutting on the Lassen National Forest. Permits are available at Forest Service offices and at some seasonal offices during the summer. The permit authorizes the signer of the permit to gather a specified amount of dead and downed wood, for his or her personal use, from any portion of the Sierra National Forest open to woodcutting.
