Don't try to remove an attached tick by burning it with a match or smothering it with Vaseline. Neither will work, both will let the tick stick around longer than desired, and the whole match thing 2026 yeah, those don't go well next to dog/cat fur and skin.

Do not try to: Smother a tick that is stuck to your skin with petroleum jelly, nail polish, gasoline, or rubbing alcohol. Burn the tick while it is stuck to your skin.

To remove a tick that is embedded in the skin, grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible, using tweezers if available. Pull upward with a steady, continuous motion. To ensure the whole tick is removed, try not to twist it or jerk it.

Touching it with a hot match is a common one. Others include covering it with petroleum jelly or nail polish (in theory to suffocate it), or freezing it off. These are all supposed to make the tick back out of the skin on its own.

Note: Never use petroleum jelly or a hot match to kill and remove a tick. These methods don't get the tick off the skin, and can make it burrow deeper.
