Permit Imprints are a way to pay for business (also known as discount or bulk) postage. It is one of three business mail payment options, the other two being meters and precanceled stamps. Permit imprints are the only postage option that can ONLY be used for business mailing.

For Mail Owners using a Mail Service Provider permit to pay postage, what is called a ?Ghost Permit? is required. These ghost permits are established by request at the post office where the mailing is verified and paid for. These are non-paying postal permits, used for identification purposes only.

The ?Mail Anywhere? program is a benefit to Full-Service customers and allows them to use a single permit to present Full-Service or mixed Full-Service mailings at any Business Mail Acceptance site. This simplifies permit management and enables the customer to maintain a single permit to enter and pay for mailings.

The indicia must be placed in a clear area that is free from any other text, graphics or markings. The actual size of the indicia must be a minimum of one-half inch high by one-half inch wide. It must be placed no more than 1.5 inches below, or to the left of, the upper right hand corner of your postcard.

A mailing permit is permission to use a certain postage payment method for commercial mailings. Instructions for applying for a mailing permit are included under each method of payment. There is no fee to apply for a permit to mail with precanceled stamps or a postage meter.

It may be only four or five lines long. It must appear to the upper right of the delivery address.

Take a piece of mail bearing a mail permit imprint to the post office and ask the postal worker to trace the mail permit number. You will need to verify that you are either the bearer of the mail permit--the sender--or the recipient of the piece of mail bearing the mail permit. Bring photo identification with you.
