Select the object (table, equation, figure, or another object) that you want to add a caption to. On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. In the Label list, select the label that best describes the object, such as a figure or equation.

Equations are centered on the page and labeled with Arabic numerals, right-aligned, in parentheses, and referred to only by those numbers in the text ? e.g., you should always say ?as seen in (3)? rather than ?as seen in Equation (3)?.

Equations should be numbered consecutively beginning with (1) to the end of the paper, including any appendices. The number should be enclosed in parentheses and set flush right in the column on the same line as the equation. It is this number that should be used when referring to equations within the text.

Basic Steps to Setting Up Equations Determine what the question is asking. Write down the relevant information in simple statements. Assign symbols to unknown values that need to be found. Determine how the statements relate to each other mathematically.

The equation numbers should be enclosed by parentheses and placed at the right-hand side of the page. If you are referring to an equation in the text, use eq. (3) (or other abbreviations). If it is the first word in a sentence, capitalize it, i.e., Eq.

Some journals do not follow the equation with any punctuation marks, relying on the wording of the sentence alone to carry the meaning.

If you need to use an equation, add or write it in Word. Select Insert > Equation or press Alt + =. To use a built-in formula, select Design > Equation. To create your own, select Design > Equation > Ink Equation. Use your finger, stylus, or mouse to write your equation.

Numbering all equations makes it easier for the reader to find a specific equation. If only important equations are numbered, then you can have pages without any numbered equation, so you cannot know whether the equation you are looking for is before or after that page.

Simply select the ?Insert? tab and choose ?Equation? under the ?Symbols? section. If you still do not see the Equation option, you may have to go to ?File? > ?Options? > ?Customize Ribbon?. Select ?All Commands? in the ?Choose commands from? menu, then add ?Symbols? to the tabs listed on the right side of the screen.
