Frequency Modulation (FM) is the encoding of information in a carrier wave by changing the instantaneous frequency of the wave. FM technology is widely used in the fields of computing, telecommunications, and signal processing.

AM stands for amplitude modulation, which means the amplitude of the radio signal is used to encode information. FM denotes frequency modulation, which uses a change in frequency to encode information. From this you can see that both AM and FM radio use modulation to encode information.

The basic principle is simple. At one end, a transmitter ?encodes? or modulates messages by varying the amplitude or frequency of the wave ? a bit like Morse code. At the other, a receiver tuned to the same wavelength picks up the signal and 'decodes' it back to the desired form: sounds, images, data, etc.

Frequency is measured in the unit hertz (Hz), referring to a number of cycles per second. One thousand hertz is referred to as a kilohertz (kHz), 1 million hertz as a megahertz (MHz), and 1 billion hertz as a gigahertz (GHz). The range of the radio spectrum is considered to be 3 kilohertz up to 300 gigahertz.

Radio works by transmitting and receiving electromagnetic waves. The radio signal is an electronic current moving back and forth very quickly. A transmitter radiates this field outward via an antenna; a receiver then picks up the field and translates it to the sounds heard through the radio.

Radio waves are radiated by charged particles when they are accelerated. Natural sources of radio waves include radio noise produced by lightning and other natural processes in the Earth's atmosphere, and astronomical radio sources in space such as the Sun, galaxies and nebulas.

RF uses binary data to encode and transmit data via radio waves. Rather than zeros and ones, think of it as altered and non-altered radio waves. To transmit a number, we use a specific combination of altered and non-altered radio waves to 'code' the number in a manner that is meaningful to the receiver.
