Follow these steps: Press Ctrl+H to display the Replace tab of the Find and Replace dialog box. (See Figure 1.) In the Find What box, enter ^f. This indicates that you want to search for footnote marks. Make sure the Replace With box is empty. Click on Replace All. Close the Find and Replace dialog box.

Another way you can do this is to right-click the footnote at the bottom of the page, select Go to Footnote and then delete the number there.

Press the Delete button on your keyboard twice. The first time you press the Delete button, Word will select the reference number next to the cursor. The second time you press Delete, Word will remove the reference number and the note. Word will also automatically renumber the remaining notes.

To adjust the settings of your footnote, including the numbering style, when to start and stop the numbering of your notes, etc., click on the Expand icon in the Footnotes Group of the References Ribbon. You can have your footnotes and endnotes restart their numbering in each chapter.

Renumbering Existing Footnotes Make sure that Track Changes is not in use. Go to Insert> Footnote. Confirm that the Footnote option is selected. From the Number choices select Continuous. Confirm that Apply changes to specifies Whole document. Be sure to click Apply rather than Insert to close the dialog window.

If you delete the footnote or endnote itself, Word for the web renumbers the notes in a new order. If you're in Reading View, switch to Editing View by clicking Edit Document > Edit in Word for the web. If you want to delete the footnote (that's at the bottom of the page), delete the number ?1? in the body.

If you have previously inserted footnotes or endnotes into your document and you want to later delete one of them, follow these steps: Highlight the footnote or endnote reference mark in your document. (In the document itself, not in the footnote or endnote area.) Press either Del or Ctrl+X.
