Use prepared formula within two hours of mixing and within one hour of starting your baby's feeding. Once you've fed your baby their formula, make sure to discard any formula left over in the bottle. Bacteria from your baby's mouth can seep into the bottle, contaminate the formula, and make your baby sick if they drink it later. Also, if you've warmed a bottle, you'll need to feed it to your baby within one hour or throw it out. Don't put warmed formula back in the fridge to use later.

You don't have to warm up a bottle of formula (room temperature or even cold from the fridge is just fine). But if you do heat it gently, once you've warmed it, rewarming it isn't recommended, as bacteria thrive in warm places. And when it comes to serving a warmed-up bottle, do so within one hour.

Parents who return formula to WIC are allowed to get a different product. The returned formula, as Sarazua learned, is destroyed, even if the containers are unopened and unexpired.

You can put the bottle of formula back in the fridge if it has been in the bottle pack or cool bag for less than 2 hours. But make sure to use it within 24 hours of when it was first prepared. Throw away any prepared formula you haven't used or put back in the fridge within 2 hours.

If you prepare formula ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator. You can use pre-made formula for up to 24 hours. Open containers of ready-made formula, concentrated formula, and formula prepared from concentrate can be stored safely in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.
