In SAP Retail, Articles are assigned to Article Categories at the time of creation, and the designation cannot be changed thereafter. You can distinguish Materials from Articles by examining field ATTYP (Material Category) in database table MARA. The counterpart of a Material is a single Article.

In a layman language, The Article Master or Material Master is all about what a company produces and sells. To keep all the information from product to product and its selling information along with different varieties available including final offering price to customers/end-user.

In the material master you can process only one material or one plant at a time, but in the article master the system transfers data from higher levels to the dependent levels, provided you have not maintained these differently. For example, the system transfers data from a generic article to all its variants.

Article types group together articles with the same attributes. When you create an article master record, you must assign it to a single article type. The article type you choose determines: Whether the article number can be assigned internally by the system or externally by the user.

To relate this to SAP standard, consider that a Single Article is the equivalent of a standard Material, but enriched for Retail business processes. Then there are several so-called Structured Article Categories that can roughly be understood as a Material with an associated Bill of Materials (BOM).

A classic example for a Display Article is a display of Batteries. The Display article includes the packaging (a cardboard shelving or display case that is displayed in the store) and an assortment of batteries.
