The Federal Reserve used to send the shredded cash to landfills, but now 90% of the money is recycled. It's used to make compost, potting soil, housing insulation or cement. Recycling plants in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Seattle burn the shredded currency to generate electricity.

Federal Reserve Cash departments work to recycle everything from office paper to shredded currency, which is the residue left over when worn or damaged currency is destroyed.

The Federal Reserve Bank will then store the damaged bills for destruction. When enough old bills have been collected, the Federal Reserve Banks will shred them. If you take a tour of a Federal Reserve Bank, you can sometimes take home your very own unique souvenir: a bag of shredded paper money!

Central banks routinely collect and destroy worn-out coins and banknotes in exchange for new ones. This does not affect the money supply, and is done to maintain a healthy population of usable currency. The practice raises an interesting possibility.

When currency is deposited with a Federal Reserve Bank, the quality of each note is evaluated by sophisticated processing equipment. Notes that meet our strict quality criteria--that is, that are still in good condition--continue to circulate, while those that do not are taken out of circulation and destroyed.

Currency that is still valid, but is simply worn, ripped, or in otherwise poor condition can be replaced at a bank. Deposit the money into any account, and the bank's relationship with their country's central bank and minting service will ensure that it is swapped for fresh currency.

How to redeem older bank notes. The $1, $2, $25, $500 and $1,000 bills still retain their face value even though they are no longer legal tender. You can take them to your financial institution or send them to the Bank of Canada to redeem them. Or, you can decide to keep them.

Just take it into your local bank and ask them to replace it. As long as you have at least half of the bill left, most banks will gladly exchange it for you.
