For extreme cases of damage, you can send bills to the Department of the Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) to be examined. They have a Mutilated Currency Division full of U.S. currency experts that examine mutilated bills and bent coins for free and will return an equivalent amount.

Every day the Chicago Fed and the Detroit Branch shred about $26 million in worn out currency, for a total of nearly $6.5 billion in 2017. The Chicago Fed counted about $43.4 billion in currency in 2017. Federal Reserve Banks count about 100,000 notes per hour in their cash processing facilities, as of 2017.

Shredded currency is available through BEP. Small amounts, as pre-packaged novelty souvenirs, are available for sale in the Washington, D.C. and Fort Worth visitor centers.

Larger amounts of shredded currency for use in artistic or commercial purposes will need to be obtained from a Federal Reserve bank; and written approval from BEP's Chief, Office of Compliance, is required before a Federal Reserve Bank will consider honoring currency residue requests.

Various Federal Reserve banks recycle the shreds in different ways. Some use it for compost, building insulation or cement. Some use it to generate electricity. Others turn it into trinkets, like snow globes or piggy banks filled with shredded money ? a second act for that blemished bill.

Under regulations issued by the Department of the Treasury, mutilated United States currency may be exchanged at face value if: More than 50% of a note identifiable as United States currency is present.

Also, apart from the one and a half rule of damaged money, money that is dirty, torn or defaced can also be changed at the bank. Replacing damaged money is easier than replacing mutilated money. All you have to do is to take the damaged money to the bank, and they will replace the money for you.

Federal Reserve Banks order new currency from the U.S. Mint and remove it from circulation as needed.

It is simply the transfer of an asset's ownership, where the asset is either given away or sold. Dispositions involving an assignment and/or transfer can also be completed for accounting and tax purposes to get relief from any associated taxes or any other liability.

If a bill is counterfeit, it is sent to the Secret Service. But if it's merely unfit by the Fed's standards, then the machine shreds it. Those shredded notes are sent to landfills or packaged and provided as souvenirs to the public on Federal Reserve Bank tours.
