If you own a vehicle with a certificate of title that is faulty, lost, or destroyed, or you possess an abandoned vehicle, you may apply to the BMV for authority to sell, give away, or dispose of the vehicle for scrap metal without applying for a certificate of title.

A person may apply for authority to dispose of a motor vehicle by completing the Application for Authority to Dispose of a Motor Vehicle to a Demolisher (Form VTR-71-2).

Has remained on private property without the consent of the owner or person in control of that property for more than forty-eight (48) hours; or. The engine, transmission, or differential has been removed or that is otherwise partially dismantled or inoperable and left on public property.

A Certificate of Destruction is a document given in receipt of a vehicle being scrapped. This certificate proves that the previous owner has disposed of their vehicle responsibly and relieves them of all legal responsibility.

If the vehicle is abandoned, you must meet the requirements of Indiana Code 9-22. This consists of proof of delivery of a certified letter or a certificate of mailing if the vehicle is worth under $1,000 to the vehicle owner and lienholder (if applicable).

The order must establish ownership, provide a description of the vehicle (year, make, VIN), direct the BMV to issue a certificate of title to the owner, and contain the signature of the judge and court seal or stamp.
