The raster sunset program will gradually end production and maintenance of NOAA traditional paper and raster nautical chart products. Beginning in 2021, NOAA will start canceling its traditional nautical charts. The process is expected to be completed by January 2025.

3 Comparison Between Paper and Electronic Charts. The biggest single advantage of electronic charts over paper systems to the professional navigator is the ease of correction. Both raster and vector systems allow for automatic electronic correction of the charts onboard, with no real work on the part of the navigator.

Even in cases where electronic charts have replaced them for primary use, paper charts are a reliable backup should the system fail, providing the same navigational essentials at a variety of scales. The nautical chart is an indispensable tool for navigation.

The placement of figures and tables should be at the center of the page. It should be properly referenced and ordered in the number that it appears in the text. In addition, tables should be set apart from the text. Text wrapping should not be used.
