The Federal Reserve System operates 28 cash processing locations in the United States, providing U.S. currency and coin to financial institutions domestically and around the world. Banks in the United States order currency and coin from the Federal Reserve (Fed) and deposit excess banknotes back with the Fed.

The FY 2022 print order ranges from 6.9 billion notes to 9.7 billion notes. The lower range of the order is a decrease of about 0.1 billion notes, or 1.6 percent, from the BEP's final delivery of 7.0 billion notes in FY 2021.

The Fed controls the supply of money by increas- ing or decreasing the monetary base. The monetary base is related to the size of the Fed's balance sheet; specifically, it is currency in circulation plus the deposit balances that depository institutions hold with the Federal Reserve.

Notes are inspected for authenticity and fitness at a rate of approximately 100,000 notes per hour, and notes that are no longer fit for circulation are destroyed by the Federal Reserve.

However, the amount of currency printed by the BEP each year is determined by the Fed, which then submits an order to the BEP. The Fed then distributes that currency via armored carrier to its 28 cash offices, which then further distributes it to 8,400 banks, savings and loans and credit unions across the country.

Federal Reserve Bank cash offices distribute banknotes to the public through depository institutions, such as commercial banks, credit unions, and savings and loans associations. Federal Reserve Banks are responsible for processing banknotes to ensure that they are genuine and fit for recirculation.
