The authority to print money in the U.S. rests solely with the federal government, and the only legal tender in the country is the U.S. dollar.

The Reserve Bank has the sole right to issue currency notes, except one rupee notes which are issued by the Ministry of Finance. The RBI follows a minimum reserve system in the note issue. Initially, it used to keep 40 per cent of gold reserves in its total assets.

In the 1800s, for example, much of the country's paper currency consisted of notes issued by private banks. Nowadays, commercial banks don't print their own notes, but they create money just the same?in the form of checking accounts.

Objective of the Citizens' Charter This Citizens' Charter provides information on various facilities provided by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the matter of exchange of notes and coins and the common standards of the services provided at RBI Issue Offices and designated branches.

In terms of Section 22 of the Act, Reserve Bank has the sole right to issue banknotes in India. Section 25 states that the design, form and material of bank notes shall be such as may be approved by the Central Government after consideration of the recommendations made by the Central Board of RBI.

The Department receives notes from four currency note printing presses. Two of the currency note printing presses are owned by the Government of India and two are owned by the Reserve Bank, through its wholly owned subsidiary, the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Ltd. (BRBNML).

The country's central bank can simply determine the new dollar balances needed and credit them to other accounts. Today's Federal Reserve buys new, readily liquefiable accounts, such as U.S. Treasuries, on the open market from financial institutions to add funds to their existing bank reserves.

U.S currency is produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and U.S. coins are produced by the U.S. Mint. Both organizations are bureaus of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Applying for a Bank Charter The proposed bank must first receive approval for a federal or state banking charter. Before granting a charter, the chartering regulator must determine that the applicant bank has a reasonable chance for success and will operate in a safe and sound manner.
